Carolina Raptor Center

 Carolina Raptor Center

This weekend I went to the Carolina Raptor Center for the first time and had a great time. I'm usually not a big fan of birds (they scare me, sad I know), but it was a really cool place!

It's a 57-acre living museum and avian medical facility displaying over 25 species of raptors in a zoo-like setting. The Raptor Center is located in Latta Plantation Nature Preserve. The 3/4 mile Raptor Trail features eagles, owls, falcons, hawks, vultures and other raptor species.  Weekend programming includes year round live bird presentations and other educational tours.

The Raptor center houses injured raptors and helps with their recovery so they are strong enough to be released into the wild again.  The center also helps spread awareness to shares ways to help prevent injuries (as simple as just not littering near busy roads).

We went on a Sunday (before the football games of course) and got to see a live bird presentation of an owl who was blind and a hawk who was missing part of his left wing. You can tell the staff really cares about the birds and love their jobs. They are very knowledgeable - and you will learn a lot!

If you are looking for something fun to do with family or friends I definitely recommend visiting the Carolina Raptor Center!
